Mud gas separator also called poor boy degasser, it is a kind of well-control equipments.  When harmful combustible gas is too much to result in kick even Blowout accident occcurred, mud gas separator must be applied together with electric flare ignition device.

GN ZCQ series mud gas separator have two types, one is manual-control, the other one is auto-control, the  pedestal can be made into fixed type or elevating type according to customer’s requirement.

Vacuum degasser is also called mud gas separator, but they are different equipments. When there is only a little gas invade drilling mud and the gas is not harmful combustible gas, vacuum degasser can be applied in such situation. At the same time, vacuuum degasser can be used as agitator with large power, suitable for variable kinds of drilling fluids circulation system.

Vacuum type degasser is the most common type, there is a new centrifugal  degasser applied.

Well control operations are instructions on blowout-prevention equipment, warning signs of kicks.  

Blowout is the uncontrolled release of crude oil and/or natural gas from drilling well after pressure control systems failed. Since it is a horrible accident, we need to less and prevent its happening by careful operation and proper well-control equipments.

Blowout preventer is a large, specialized valve used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells. Kicks can lead to a potentially catastrophic event known as a blowout. Blowout preventers are also intended to prevent tubing, tools and drilling mud from being blown out of the wellbore when a blowout threatens. Blowout preventers are critical to the safety of crew, rig and environment, and to the monitoring and maintenance of well integrity; thus blowout preventers are intended to be fail-safe devices.

 Vacuum degasser:

Vacuum degasser in oilfield drilling fluids gas separating also called Gas Buster. Vacuum Degasser is a special-purpose device for the treatment of gas in the drilling fluids. It can get rid of various gas of invasive drilling quickly. Vacuum degasser is very important for returning mud gravity, stabilizing mud viscosity and reducing drilling cost. 

Vacuum Degasser( degasser) is the first units of solids control equipment arranged to treat drilling mud. As such, they process all of the drilling mud from the flow line before the mud reaches the primary shale shakers. The units have no moving parts and rely on the density difference between the gas and the mud for removal. The process is simple, yet very effective for well drilling fluids processing system.

GN vacuum degasser is different with Derrick Vacu-Flo Degasser Model 500, both in structure and working principle,  but they have same function as follows.

GN drilling rig vacuum degasser(ZCQ series) is a special-purpose device for the treatment of gas-cut drilling fluid. It is a new type one we have designed and developed by combining different sorts of degassers from home and abroad. It’s applied to match with various mud purification system. It is important for returning mud gravity, stabilizing mud viscosity and reducing drilling cost. Also, it can be used as a heavy-power agitator during the operation of gas free mud.

Working principle of GN vacuum degasser

The vacuum degasser uses the suction of the vacuum pump to establish an under balanced pressure area in the vacuum cylinder and causes the drilling fluid into the hollow shaft of the rotator through suction pipe under the atmosphere pressure, and then lets the fluid spray to the walls of the cylinder from the windows on the hollow shaft, now the gas bubble cut in the mud may break and run off in the function of vacuum pump suction to a safe area due to the fluid collision and bubble separator. However, the mud will enter the drainage cavity forced by its self-weight and pass the rotator and discharge off the cylinder. In addition, drilling mud can enter the pump cylinder only through the suction pipe, and can’t be sucked in through the discharge pipe because the vacuum pump and the master motor are started simultaneously and the rotator connected to the motor will revolve at a high speed.

Recently wellsite disasters have led to an increased emphasis on properly sized mud/gas separators. Mud gas separator is a device that removes gas from the mud coming out of a well when a kick is being circulated out.

 GN Mud gas separator has been designed to capture and separate large volume of free gases within the drilling fluid. Designed for high pressure wells, this unit controls the circulated gas to the surface separating the gas from the mud and vent it.

GN produce mud degasser for the drilling mud recycling system, GN Vac-degasser has been widely used in the oilfield, also GN can produce mud gas separator(poor boy degasser).  

When your drilling mud has only a little gas, vac-degasser is enough, but if there are much harmful and ignitered gas, you should use a poor boy degasser with an electric igniter to burn it, that is the simplest way to distinguish when to use vacuum degasser and when to use poor boy degasser. Also you can remember the vac-degasser is used in the mud system, but poor boy degasser is used near the wellhead, before entering into solids control system.
