GN mud agitators are high efficiency mud-mixing units offered in a wide array of custom sizes and configurations to accommodate virtually any mud tank. They are mainly used for agitating drilling fluids, avoid particle in fluids deposit to tank bottom.
Today we would like to share our experience on how to design mud agitator. As we all known, the mud agitator stirs mud slurry to maintain suspension of solids. The agitator is mounted on top of the mud tank and has one or two impeller(s) immersed in the mud slurry.
The agitator’s impeller shaft is coupled to an electric drive motor with coupling. The horsepower of the drive motors rates from 7.5HP to 20HP, which is named 5.5kw to 15kw.

Single impeller is usually matched for motors below 11kw. And double impellers are more suitable for those above 11kw. Based on user’s request and onsite condition, the vertical location of the impeller on the shaft is determined as a height from the tank bottom corresponding to the impeller diameter times 0.75. Take a 20 inch impeller as an example; it should be mounted at the height of 15 inch higher than the bottom.
GN recommends straight impellers blades for tanks under 5 inch deep and canted blades for deeper tanks. If dual impellers are desired, straight blades are mounted on the bottom and the canted blade impeller is installed at the height of two-thirds above the tank bottom.
By using a multi-piece coupling, the main motor and driven impeller shafts are rigidly connected. The connected coupling is using a tapered bushing to secure the shafts together.
For different customers, the lengths of the shafts are customized to suit customers’ specifications. A special device named stabilizer are usually welded at the bottom of the tank to keep the balance of the entire shaft.

Mud transfering centrifugal pump in GN’s product line range from 20~320m3 by flow. This centrifugal pump is designed to handle abrasive, viscous and corrosive fluids in drilling or industrial slurry applications. Comparing with conventional pumps, GN’s centrifugal pump has an exceptional performance by large volume, high temperature capabilities and easer to maintenance.

With outlet 2″-6″, GN’s centrifugal pump has a head capacity range from 12m to 62m. It could be working well in the tempreture span of 100℃(-40℃~60℃).
Strong and thick pump housing design of ring runner shape to eliminate the turbulence and cavitation within the pump housing. The small distance between the impeller and the housing to be the same at all points as the centrifugal design.
In order to reduce the turbulence, lower radial and thrust loads, and provides a smooth flow of fluid through the pump, the impeller is designed for open-vane. Aslo thie design allow fluid leaving the impeller to blend with recirculating fluid to reduce abrasive wear of the casing. By using O-type oil seal to protect the no exposed shaft threads, the lifetime of the pump largely extended.
Worth to mention is that all GN centrifugal pump is using mechnical seal. All metal parts are made of 316 stainless steel. Elastic part are manufactured from viton. Both rotating and stationary seal faces are tungsten carbide.

Centrifugal Pump Functions

For drilling application, GN centrifugal pump could be used for mud transfering, mud mixing and shearing operations, desanding and deislting, degassing, supercharging, centrifugal feed, mud cooling tower and wash down.

In solids control system, GN’s centrifugal pump has below applications:

  • Mud transfering  By locating the centrifugal pump on the mud tank skid, the drilling mud could be transferred from tank shaker compartment to the Mud Cleaner for treatment by hydrocyclone.
  • Mud Mixing   Combined with a venturi type hopper,  the centrifugal pump could be used to shear the bentonite powders and mix the new clean drilling mud.
  • Charging pump   Connected with the mud pump unit, centrifugal pump could transfer the clean mud to mud pump, then from mud pump back to the drill rig.
