Today we will introduce one of GN’s solid control system which is Solids Removal Unit for diamond industry. The Solids Removal Unit (SRU) is mainly used in the drilling fluids and solids control for the small size mining rigs for the diamond drilling. Th2016-09-14-gn-solids-removel-unit-for-international-customer-2e solids removal units can provide the cost effective solution for the solids removal, reduced the environmental impact to the minimum level and greatly improved the efficiency for the diamond drilling.
The Solids removal unit is a closed loop for drilling fluid and solid process system. It contains mini shale shaker, mini decanter centrifuge (This is GN’s 223 centrifuge which is the world’s smallest.), pumps, mixing tanks and generators(optional). The working theory is simple, the drilling fluid will be circulated from the wellbore and went onto the shale shaker for coarse screening, the fluids will flow down to the tank and be pumped up by another feeding pump into the decanter centrifuge for finer screening. And the cleaner fluid will be recirculated into the well for drilling. There are also mixing hopper, chamber and pumps making the adding of chemical easy.

The core product in the system is GN’s 223 decanter centrifuge which is specially designed for diamond drilling industry.  There are many highlights about the equipment: the bowl material is made from duplex stainless steel SS304 which is made by centrifugal casting. The discharge port is protected by special ceramic inserts which is made by world famous manufacturer with longer and more endurable life. The adjustable effluent port makes the pond depth adjustment easier and more convenient and fast. The pneumatic controlled spring will make the opening of the cover more easily and safely. During the transportation, the bowl lifting bracket can perform as the protection for the bearings. The bearings are made by the world famous NSK/FAG. The conveyor surface is made from Tungsten carbide tiles which is more endurable and easy for maintenance. The electric components are from SIEMENS or SCHNEIDER. The shale shaker will be used for drilling the surface hole, but later when the drilling reached the diamond layer, the solids will be finer and it’s not necessary to run the shaker for the coarse screening.

The trenchless technology is also called “non-dig” which is often used in the oil and gas pipeline laying, or the underground pipe repairing without digging the ground surface. This can specially used in the densely populated area without disturbing the normal life of the local residents. Before laying the pipeline or doing the repairing job, the contracting company will need to do the HDD work, that is horizontal directional drilling, to dig to the underground and finish the job. During the drilling process, the contractors will need to use a lot drilling mud, and GN’s new mud mixing system is designed for this job. The mud mixing system consists of several mud mixing tanks and skid mounted jet mud mixing unit. On the mud tanks there are agitators and mud guns, the agitators are used to stir the mud to make it even and keep the good chemical feature. The mud gun is used to spray to corner of the tank to avoid the solids collected there. The jet mud mixing unit is used to add some chemicals to the mud system to keep the mud working in good condition. Listing some of their common questions .

1 If we provide part number and descriptions for popular brand equipments, if GN can make replacement one? For example, Mission Pump spare parts, Derrick hydrocyclone ( 4” cone and 10”cone), spring, rubber and shaker screen of Derrick Flo-Line shaker, Swaco Mongoose PT shaker spare parts, Brandt Cobra shaker spare parts, etc.

GN only produce our own brand equipments, so we can only provide spare parts for GN equipments, they can not replace for other brand equipment, even though they looked similar, they still have difference in structure.

2 If GN can produce similar shale shaker with other brand?  

For example, Swaco Mongoose PT shaker, which has 2 kinds of vibrating motion , linear and balanced elliptical motion.

Can not at present, we have BEM shaker or Linear motion shaker, but can not combine them together in one machine. Maybe in the future, we will research new one to replace it.

For example, Dual deck shale shaker , which is combination of scalper(top deck) and bottom deck( fine screen), the benefit of 2 deck shale shaker is to increase the service life of bottom deck shaker screen, separate fine particles, to separate large solids(rocks) before entering into the real shaker.

Can not at present. We have tandem shale shaker which is combination of 2 sets of shale shaker, they are mounted in one skid, so it is convenient for transportation. Only a few clients need such top& bottom type 2 deck shaker, it is not popular trend in the market, so we did not have existing design. Commonly, even it is very large solids, you can still use GN shale shaker directly without any scalper.

There are two kinds of mud system (solids control system), closed loop mud system and Reserve pit ( not closed loop mud system) .

GN can design both Closed loop mud system and reserve pit mud system. For closed loop mud system, it is usually used for oil or gas well drilling, the drilling mud flowed from high-pressure mud flow line pipe, and reserve pit mud system is usually for Directional drilling, and the drilling mud is pumped by a submersible slurry pump. But no matter what kind of mud system, you should always remember “material balance”, the mud feeded should be finally balance with the solids disposed.

The risk factors of Reserve pits include leakage through overflow, personal injury, wildlife impact, and area exposure. The costs associated with pits include excavation, lining, increased location size, solid waste, and either burying or removal of solid waste.

Compared with reserve pits, closed loop mud system can avoid such risk factors and cost reduced. Closed-loop systems employ a suite of solids control equipment to minimize drilling fluid dilution and provide the economic handling of the drilling wastes. A typical closed-loop system includes linear motion shale shaker, mud cleaner and centrifuges followed by a dewatering system. The combination of equipment typically results in a “dry” location where a reserve pit is not required, used fluids are recycled, and solid wastes can be land farmed, hauled off or injected down hole.

There is a general misconception that a closed loop mud system is more expensive than a conventional pit program. Given the correct circumstances a closed loop system could be much less expensive. Factors that influence the cost are, depth of well, size of hole, length of drilling time, and of course the proximity to a disposal facility.

We got many inquiries for HDD mud mixing system, some client connected the mud mixer with mud recycling system (add a mud mixing compartment based on the original mud recycling system) so that he can less a mud mixing tank and less the occupancy area. But some clients prefer separate mud mixing system, including mud hopper, mixing pump and mixing tank, several clients only buy a simple mud mixer unit( not a system).

The mud mixing hopper, also called a jet mixing hopper, in which materials are put into the circulating mud system. The mud hopper is powered by a centrifugal pump that flows the mud at high velocity through a venturi nozzle (jet) below the conical-shaped hopper. Dry materials are added through the mud hopper to provide dispersion, rapid hydration and uniform mixing. Liquids are sometimes fed into the mud by a hose placed in the hopper.
