During HDD projects, drilling fluid from the wellbore is pumped from the mud pit into a primary or scalping shaker, where larger drill cuttings are removed. The fluid then drops into the mud tank compartment where it is recovered and pumped into hydrocyclones for removal of finer solids. some systems will discharge the hydroclone underflow slurry over ultra fine screens for additional fluids recovery. The hydrocyclone overflow (clean liquid), is discharged into a clean compartment and is ready for reuse or conditioning. Discharging hydrocyclone underflow slurry over ultra-fine screens is an very good solution to make the solids discharge much drier, and more fluid is recovered. This requires a high performance shaker with a large screen area.

How to Select the Drilling Fluids Recycling System for your HDD rig

Drilling fluids recycling system should include mixing system with a venture-style jet mixing hopper and a charge pump to send positive pressure feed back to the rig’s mud pump. Adequate tank volume is important, but treating capacity of the system is even more important. A recycling system should be capable of processing at least one and a half times the maximum capacity of the rig’s mud pump. This is usually determined by the size and number of hydrocylones the unit has.
For safety purpose, handrails and stairways are necessities for workers constantly climbing up and down the recycling system.

Offshore drilling mud system became highly important to reduce the disastrous affect on the surrounding marine environment and treating drilling fluids and make it circulation.

Offshore drilling rigs are configured with a number of different drilling systems to suit drilling in the marine environment, it is the difference between onshore and offshore drilling.

In the drilling process, the drilling fluid is used as the following function.

These drilling muds and cuttings as well as the produced waters contain, these chemicals pose a threat to the area surrounding the rigs for as many as forty years.

For every well that is drilled, about 8,000 square feet can be covered by as much as a meter thick of drilling waste, which can remain in the environment for at least two years. If the mud were to get scattered, the waste could ultimately last for as long as forty years.

Drilling mud ( also called drilling fluids) including water-based mud (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed) , oil-based mud (non-aqueous mud) and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of gases can be used.

Oil-based mud can be a mud where the base fluid is a petroleum product such as diesel fuel. Oil-based mud are used for many reasons, some being increased lubricity, enhanced shale inhibition, and greater cleaning abilities with less viscosity. Oil-based mud also withstand greater heat without breaking down. The use of oil-based mud has special considerations. These include cost and environmental considerations.

In a solids control system, desilting is after desanding work, and depends on the drilling mud character,  the desanding or desilting unit is not always need. The desanding and desilting equipments are called desander and desilter, or combine them, as mud cleaner.

Desilting can be used to separate large particles from oil-based mud to get drilling fluids balance and clean.

 What is the function of Barite for drilling fluids?

 Barite is commonly used to add weight to drilling fluid. Barite is of significance to petrophysicists because excess barite can require a correction factor in some well log measurements.

 A dense mineral, comprising barium sulfate [BaSO4]. Commonly used as a weighting agent for all types of drilling fluids, barites are mined in many areas worldwide and shipped as ore to grinding plants in strategic locations, where API specifies grinding to a particle size of 3 to74 microns. Pure barium sulfate has a specific gravity of 4.50 g/cm3, but drilling-grade barite is expected to have a specific gravity of at least 4.20 g/cm3 to meet API specifications. Contaminants in barite, such as cement, siderite, pyrrhotite, gypsum and anhydrite, can cause problems in certain mud systems and should be evaluated in any quality assurance program for drilling-mud additives.

 During drilling, cuttings are obviously created, but they do not usually pose a problem until drilling stops because a drillbit requires replacement or another problem. When this happens, and drilling mud are not used, the cuttings then fill the hole again. Drilling mud are used as a suspension tool to keep this from happening. The viscosity of the drilling mud increases when movement decreases, allowing the fluid to have a liquid consistency when drilling is occurring and then turn into a more solid substance when drilling has stopped. Cuttings are then suspended in the well until the drill is again inserted. This gel-like substance then transforms again into a liquid when drilling starts back up.

GN drilling rig vacuum degasser(ZCQ series) is a special-purpose device for the treatment of gas-cut drilling fluid. It is a new type one we have designed and developed by combining different sorts of degassers from home and abroad. It’s applied to match with various mud purification system. It is important for returning mud gravity, stabilizing mud viscosity and reducing drilling cost. Also, it can be used as a heavy-power agitator during the operation of gas free mud.

Working principle of GN vacuum degasser

The vacuum degasser uses the suction of the vacuum pump to establish an under balanced pressure area in the vacuum cylinder and causes the drilling fluid into the hollow shaft of the rotator through suction pipe under the atmosphere pressure, and then lets the fluid spray to the walls of the cylinder from the windows on the hollow shaft, now the gas bubble cut in the mud may break and run off in the function of vacuum pump suction to a safe area due to the fluid collision and bubble separator. However, the mud will enter the drainage cavity forced by its self-weight and pass the rotator and discharge off the cylinder. In addition, drilling mud can enter the pump cylinder only through the suction pipe, and can’t be sucked in through the discharge pipe because the vacuum pump and the master motor are started simultaneously and the rotator connected to the motor will revolve at a high speed.
