Drilling fluid and equipment maintenance cost can decrease greatly when proper solids control practices are utilized. From a fluid control stand point it would be desirable in most cases to remove all drilled solids. Although this is possible, it would be cost prohibitive. The goal of a solids control system is to achieve the balance between mechanical solids separation and dilution that will result in drill solids being maintained at an acceptable level with a minimum of cost.

More and more drilling contractor realized the importance of solids control. Drilling fluids solids control has become key issue of making o&g drilling fast, safe, qualified, as well as the effective method of protecting o & g bed. So, solids control is important way to overcome optimizing well drilling.

Doing solids control well and correctly can protect oil gas bed, decrease the torque and friction, decrease the wave of suction pressure. Low down the possibility of drilling block, speed up the well drilling process, extend drill bit usable life. Reduce abrasion on equipments. Increase the spare parts usable life in drilling fluids circulation system. Make well head more stable, improve conditions of setting pipelines. And more environment-friendly as well as cut down the drilling fluids cost, etc.

Solids control type

There are so many solids control method, usually we’ll take following as main solution:

One is dilution, it uses clean water or other watery liquid to dilute drilling mud; second is replacement, it uses clean water or standard new drilling mud with good property to take place of certain drilling mud including some solids then decrease general solids percentage. Above method are usually used together to get better result of solids control

The third one is mechanical way. It will be realized through shale shaker, desander, desilter, mud cleaner, decanting centrifuge, etc. machinery equipments. Take the advantage of screen filtration, and decanting separation principle. Then the solid will be separated out according to density and particle size, and we’ll decide to use and delete subject to actual demand. Finally we achieve the solids control aim.

Drilling fluid solids control system works well and requests little investment, each solids control equipment holding special superiority and separate related solid particle size.

Fourth one is chemical way. During this process, we use stable drilling fluid system to control drilling cutting. Will make cuttings stable together or concentration. It benefits mechanical separation or chemical settling. This is mutual addition mechanical solids separation

Solid particle size and effect on well drilling and drilling fluid

Particle size is mainly meaning the surface area of solid particle. Surface more bigger the water will be much.

Especially when the bigger particles separating smaller particle, although the measurement is same the surface area increase will lead water content increasing then drilling fluid property will be worse and won’t benefit well drilling process.

How does each solids control equipment work

Shale shaker is the first stage solids control equipment, mainly take advantage of screen separation, it make better fluid condition for next stage equipments such as vacuum degasser, desander hydrocyclone separator, desilter, or mud cleaner.

Then the vacuum degasser. Usually there is horizontal and vertical type. Nowadays we usually use vertical type since it take less space. The principle is using vacuum pump to suck drilling mud after separating out gas, vacuum pump will pump it away. During vacuum degasser processing, it is not separating solid particle but getting rid of little invaded gas.

The hydrocyclone desander separator. We only call it desander. Usually, it is combined desander cone and underset shaker. But many users only inquire desander cone. It takes advantage of cyclone separation principle. Then separate particle sized 47~74microns out. Subsequently, desilter holding same principle and separate particle sized 15~46 microns

Mud cleaner and desander/desilter will be selected as one. And under set shaker of mud cleaner can choose rather fine shaker screen. Such as 300 mesh. This will lead left particle size much small and decrease drilling fluid weight as well as decrease the decanter centrifuge load.

Decanter centrifuge, takes the principle of decanting separation. The reduction between screw and convey makes drilling fluid separate particle sized 2~7 micron out. This will meet high requirement of drilling deep oil well, etc.
