All the separated liquid will be circulated into the next cycle and the solid will be transferred into the waste tank for waste disposal. If there will be more valuable element in the liquid, such as the barite, there will be a shaker screen for further separation. Entering the 2016, the oil price is constantly at a low point and all the world economy is suffering.

At the end of last month, GN Solids Control took a new order from 1 of the customers in Middle East – 1 set of Mud Recycling system which will be mainly used for treating the drilling mud in Oil Drilling Industry.


This Mud Recycling System mainly includes:

1.2 sets of Shale shaker;

2.1 set of Mud Cleaner;

3.Several Mud Pumps;

4.2 Mud tanks;




The main features are:

  1. Skid-mounted, very convenient for transportation and moving;
  2. Compact structure, all the main equipments like the Shale Shaker/Mud Cleaner/Mud Pumps and the Mud Tanksa are all fit on the skid;

Shale shaker is the first stage equipment in a complete set of solids control system to separate coarse solids out of the spent drilling fluids, then the liquids will be transported to 2nd and 3rd stage equipment to further separate the fine solids out from the drilling fluids. So in a solids control system, the desander and desilter cyclones are the 2nd and 3rd stage equipment. The working principles of both desander and desilter are same, the diffidence is the size of cyclones.

Imagine what will happen if a tornado inside of a bottle, then you will get a simple and general idea on how a cyclone works.

When the drilling fluids is injected into a cyclone with high speed in the tangential direction, the drilling fluids will spiral like a tornado downward and gravitate towards the cyclone wall because of the centrifugal force and inertia. The larger the solids are, the more preferentially the solids will settle. As the cyclones narrows, the drilling fluids at the innermost and center of the cyclone will spiral towards the overflowing port thus a low pressure area inside the cyclone where the clean air goes through the underflow port. While the solids with large mass can not turn back to the overflow port because of their momentum but continue spiral downwards and come out from the underflow port. Therefore the clean fluids will flow out through the overflow port, and solids will be discharged from the drilling fluids.

with liquids go to next stage treatment by centrifuge. The coarse solids discharged from cuttings dryer is dry enough,
generally OOC below 3-5%. Internationally, the solids will go to Thermal desorption unit or incinerator for final
treatment into ashes or produce into bricks. The decanter centrifuge is used to handle the liquids discharged from
the vertical cutting dryer to collect more clean fluids to active system. The high G shaker is to treat the water
based mud cuttings for its high G force to drying the drilling cuttings.

No well is drilled without the generation of wastes. Actually generation of wastes is the process of solids build-up in the mud which is undesirable because it will produce bad influence on the drilling process with the decreased function of the drilling fluids. With the drilled solids increasing, it will be increasingly difficult to control the solid-build up process because of the rheological and filtration properties, thus the drilling mud penetration rate and bit life will decrease but the hole problems will increase.  As it name indicates, solids controls is to control build up process of undesirable solids in a mud system during the drilling activity. In other words, solids control means to clean the spent drilling mud by removing solids generated during drilling includes the cuttings and chemicals

The solids can be divided into two main sources, one if formation cuttings generated during drill, the other is chemical additives. The performance of drilling fluids will be degraded by the cuttings which will be scraped into smaller and smaller particles and become much more difficult to remove. Generally the cuttings include different size of solids, coarse solids usually larger than 500 microns; fine sand usually larger than 40 microns, fine silt usually from 6 to 44 size, and ultra-fine clays usually smaller than 6 microns. Most of the solids can be removed mechanically at the surface.

In April 2015, GN Solids Control delivered 3 sets high G shaker and 3 sets high speed decanter centrifuge
to a Sichuan customer, these machines have started to operate on the drilling site for Sinopec projects.

The High G shaker is always used to treat the WBM waste. When the cuttings came out from the well together with the
drilling fluids, they will be separated out so that the clean liquids can be collected for recycling usage.
Even though, the cuttings still are too wet to be discharged to the ground directly,
so the high G shaker is used to dry the cuttings discharged from solids control equipment shale shaker and cyclones.
After treated by the High G shaker, the liquids will be further treated by the decanter centrifuge.
Detailed process are listed as below.


1.The waste collection container catch the drilling cuttings discharged from the primary shale shakers.
2.GN submersible slurry pump take the waste and feed to GN high G drying shale shaker GNZS594HGE-LD.
3.The mud goes through the screens of the high G drying shaker and drop down to the below tank.
4.The solids discharged from GNZS594HGE-LD drop down to the waste storage tank, and the client
will mix the solids with curing agent and lime powder for solidification treatment.
5.A screw pump will take the liquid from the tank below the drying shaker and feed to GNLW363CG-VFD
decanter centrifuge for reducing the density of the mud.
6.The decanter centrifuge will separate the solids to get clean mud for going back the active mud system for reuse.
The High G shaker is for WBM waste, the vertical cutting dryer is for the OBM waste.
