An Overview on Drilling Operations in Sudan

Seasonal shallow wells in alluvial sediments deposited along the seasonal streams courses locally known as Jamam/ Meshish providing very limited water.

Hand dug wells lined with bricks and stones are oldest well known water technique.

The first deep borehole in Sudan was drilled in 1919 at Um Ruwaba using a steam driver percussion rig.

Rotary drilling rigs were introduced in early fifth of last century. Down the hole hammer rigs (DHH) were introduced by Unicef in 1978 for drilling of slim boreholes .

1 Best installed near the pumps and pumping source, and to shorten the length of the inhalation segment, reducing the loss of the pump self-priming pump must be installed below the level of the pumping source.

2 Firstly pour the concrete foundation, place″T″type channel iron when pouring, and install skid base after the concrete freezing. All the bases are required to be level in order to avoid the machine shaking.

3 Coupling installation

3.1 Coupling must be concentric with Shaft, the two axes must be aligned and its error limits: The value of parallel deviation cannot be over 0.25; the value of intersection angle error of the two axes cannot be over 0.12.

3.2 Check: Checking the two errors by percentage meter with pedestal (As fig. shown). Its two touches must keep close to the outside circle surface or face of the coupling and rotate slowly when checking. Take the max reading shown on the meter as error value.

The hopper design along with the venturi mixer ensures that clogging and build up of chemicals is avoided. Upstream of the mixing eductor a stream is diverted to a radial premixer above the mixer inlet. Powder chemicals are pre-wetted in the radial pre-mixer before entering the venture stream in the eductor, thus eliminating “fish-eyes” and microgels.

A mud-flow device, also called a jet hopper, in which materials are put into the circulating mud system. The mud hopper is powered by a centrifugal pump that flows the mud at high velocity through a venturi nozzle (jet) below the conical-shaped hopper. Dry materials are added through the mud hopper to provide dispersion, rapid hydration and uniform mixing. Liquids are sometimes fed into the mud by a hose placed in the hopper.

Nowadays, the most popularly used oilfield shale shaker are BEM(Balanced Elliptical Motion) and Linear Motion. In China, GN Solids Control is the first one who got the API Certificate for producing shale shaker and other drilling fluids recycling equipments for oilfield application.

When need shale shaker BEM or Linear Motion

Usually, shale shaker is used as the first stage drilling fluids recycling equipments in the Mud System, and the drilling fluids with cuttings flow into the shaker distribution box through rig elevated manifold.

  • Linear Motion – for fast conveyance and heavy loading

Linear motion shaker is especially effective while drilling top hole sectiong where heavy, high volume solids are usually encountered. In these intervals, shakers need to generate high G forces to effectively move dense solids across the screens.

  • BEM – for maximum retention time and drier cuttings

The BEM type shale shaker has gentler reduced G force, and the special vibration mode make the solids stay on the screen for longer time. This results in drier solids, improved drilling-fuid recovery, longer screen life and reduced operation costs.

Person who works on drilling site know that there are several additives in the drilling mud, like bentonite,clay and Polymer. When add the polymer into the drilling mud, we may use the shearing pump.

In a drilling mud recycling system, for the bentonite and other additives, we could use the centrifugal pump to shear and mixing them. But for long strings polymer, only the shearing pump could be used for its wider flow pass and smooth vanes.

Always the shearing pump is package together with hopper, mud gun and transfer line which could transfer the mixed mud into each tank compartment. The impeller of GN shearing pump is made of high wear resistant cast iron for longer service life. GN Solids Control ever supplied one Pre-Mix system in Kazakstan. We got inquiry on Pre-Mix system in Middle East.  Pre-mix system mainly including agitators, mud guns, jet mud mixer, or shearing jet device, of course as well as mud tank for plateform mounting above equipments. 1. Mud tank specification

Mainly we construct the tank as three beam skid type. There should be a skid for shearing jet device pump. And according to client’s demand we make sloped floor/ladder, and make handrail as 1.5-1.6m high.

Furthermore, we make swing gate in handrail to allow mud material to be loaded on tank top. And it will be convenient for feeding material into the shredding hopper

Mud tank norminal dimensions should be (L) 13.7m x (W) 3.4m x (H) 3m. This is overall dimension exclude handrails.

2. Shearing jet device pump information

The pump is centrifugal one. Combined with shearing device and hopper as shearing jet device. Can be used as shredding mixing pump. According to the tank design, it holding about 352bbl capacity. So we need the charging pump hold 100m3/h treating capacity.

The detail is, 50HP motor power, 460V/60Hz/3Ph. The input and output diameter is 6″x5″, while impeller is 11″.

3. Shale shaker specification

For pre-mix mud tank system, shaker is a prepartion for mixing. As we know, pre-mix tank is for mixing and storing mud. Shaker is used to separate larger particle and provide better property drilling mud

This shale shaker don’t need large capacity. According to tank and system design 396GPM will be sufficient.  We request tow 2HP vibration motors

4. Mud gun and mud agitator

Usually we set one mud agitator per 3 meters. And mud gun should match with it. Except shaker tank or compartment we totall need 4 mud agitators and mud guns.

Mud agitator can be selected according to tank width, and height. But usually the mud gun will be modula length and type. The manual rotation is optional for certain users

GN can produce 4 inch mud hopper(500x500mm), 6 inch mud hopper(600x600mm,750x750mm), usually we assembly the mixing pump and mud hopper together as a jet mixing unit. It is widely used in our HDD system. A butterfly valve is incorporated in the neck of the hopper to adjust flow and to close off the hopper after use.

 Mud hopper usually used in mud mixing pump, High shearing mixer. Or as separated device matched with pump for bentonite configuration and mixing in mud mixing system. The working condition of mud hopper usually is mud density 1.5~2.8g/cm3, while mud viscosity is 60~120s. This is usual working condition to provide better performance as well as longer use life to save total cost on drilling.

GN mud mixing hopper are widely used in HDD(horizontal directional drilling) and oil gas drilling for bentonite mixing.Mud Mixing unit is combination of drilling mud hopper and centrifugal pumps,it’s mixing force comes from the centrifugal pump.
