Many persons may hear about the drilling mud solids control. But conerning how to purify the drlling mud, not so many people know well about it. Here we would like to talking about the drilling mud 4 stages solids control and 5 stages purification.

First stage for solids control & purification

Shale shaker is widely known as a solids control equipments used in drilling projects. It is a very basic equipment that could separate the drilling cutting more than 250 microns by fine mesh screens. During this stage, actually, the solids control and purificaion happens at the same time. Just as its name implies, solids control is separate the solids from the fluids, while the drilling cutting and other large size impurities being separated, the drilling mud is purified.

Shortly before, we received an inquiry for Mud Conditioner. At the moment we got this mail, we are confused for what is the mud conditioner, after one mail and a call to our client, we got to know that, they are in need of Mud Cleaner. In order to prevent the confusion between client and us, we are now talking about this equipments by the name of mud conditioner.

What Is Mud Conditioner

Simply Speaking, mud conditioner is a combination equipment of desander, desilter and Vibration screen. It is always used as the second and the third stage drilling mud cleaning equipment. The upper part of the mud conditioner is desander cone and desilter cone connected by pipeline system, also the pipeline worked as the frame structure. In our design, the size of the drilling mud inlet pipe is always 6″ while the outlet (also called overflow pipe) is 8″. The bottom part of the mud conditioner is a underflow shaker which we match 250 mesh fine screen on the shaker. The screen could be installed and uninstalled easily by inserting and drawing out the wedge block which is used to secure the screen. Continue reading »

Core Drilling is a main mode of exploration in mining industial like the seeking for copper, gold and silver. The main equipment of a core drilling is a diamond-tipped core drills. It is always designed as the opened end to remove a cylinder of material, The material left inside the drill bit is referred to as the core.

Core Drilling Cuttings

The cuttings created in the core drilling is very fine. These ultra fine cuttings can cause many issues down the hole such as broken cores, lost cores, and premature bit wear. In order to keep the core intact and the bit cooled, a bentonite including drilling mud is required. Besides the above mentioed two functions, the drilling mud could also take the cuttings out of the drilling hole.

Core Drilling Solids Control Unit

The flow rate of drilling mud in a core drilling is aften not large, maybe hundred GPM. So, not all the whole line solids control equipments needed. Sometimes, a desander with tank is enough to remove the ultra fine cuttings from the drilling mud. Different end user may choose different equipment to complete the mud clean mission, therefore, a high efficience centrifuge is also a ideal solution.

Vibration motors for both mud cleaners

Derrick adopt Super G2® vibrating motors feature a continuous internal oil bath lubrication system provides longer life, reduced repair costs and robust maintenance-free operation. Two Super G2 motors are standard equipment for FLC 500. GN mud cleaner use vibration motors have G force upto 7.3G also.

This provides user higher force and make better separation performance. The vibration motor will run longer and at a reduced decibel level (80 dBA) which greatly extends the life of the motor. Excellent quality offer lower cost and higher efficiency.

Screens for FLC and GN Cleaner

Derrick has many screens division according to different standard. Such as PWP, PMD, PMD+. Then according to open area percentage and weaving type there is DX, HP, also DF. As per cleaner type there is FLC500 and FLC2000.

For GN Cleaner there is various shaker screens. According to shaker and mud cleaner division we also have flat and pyramid screens with different dimensions. Such as GN703,GN852, etc. Including linear motion and BEM type. Screens for Derrick FLC and GN cleaner will adopts qualified screens manufactured as per API RP 13C. Including conductance, mesh size, cut point, etc.

Derrick use single-side tensioning system shortens screen panel replacement time more less and can be configured for operation on either the left or right side. This system provides reliable and consistent panel tensioning throughout the life of the machine.

GN screen tensioning on cleaners mainly adopt wedge block type. This don’t need tensiong bolts, etc. The screen made as frame steel type and use wedge block to tension screens at two sides. This request less replacement time and tension screens rather tight to ensure screens at good conditions and make longer screens usable life

 

Adjustable deck while drilling

Both Derrick and GN cleaners enable one person to quickly and easily raise or lower the shaker basket from -1° to +5° even -1° to +7°. As drilling rates and formation or mud properties will be variable during different drilling depth, etc.

The angle of the screen deck can be adjusted to achieve the proper solids convenience and fluid end point. Increased capacity, longer screen life, and optimal solids removal efficiency are final results.

 

Hydrocyclones or cleaner cones

Derrick offers a round desilter manifold mounted over the vibrating deck with the ability to hold up to twenty 3” or 4” hydrocyclones. This allows the FLC 500 to be used as either a high performance mud cleaner or as a means to reclaim the liquid discharged in the cone underflow.

Desander development is a long period. As people acknowledgement is higher and higher. For desander, initial maximum capacity of desander can be 6×8″ hydrocyclone group. Since block and structure issue, we begin to change the size as 10″ even 12″. However, according to clients’ preference, we also supply 8″ desander separator in oil well drilling
The important matter affect desander separator is desander cone. Then let’s talk about the cones now. What is the material on Desander? Mainly we choose PU since its high anti-corrosive ability. However, the disadvantage is can’t bare high temperature. If it is over 40℃ both strength and rigidity will decrease. Then cone will be broken and leak drilling fluid.

Then we make wall much thicker. However, this will affect cones performance or even decrease efficiency. Then any Chinese manufacturer adopt high chromium iron.

At the same time, seek durable coating on surface to provide high efficiency.
For the structure or appearance, we need to consider better water force design. This will lead linear motion to be circle motion. Connection is smooth, won’t appear air corrosion

Actually, oil rig desander is easy to be constructed. We firstly need to know the main parts on it. Including desander cones 8″, 10″, or 12″. Presently, users prefer 10″ desander cone for oil rig mud processing.

Then, for the base frame on it, the necessary pipelines including mud input line, output line, connection flanges, etc.

Getting above main parts we need to confirm the detail. Including technique specs, treating capacity requirement, dimension and pressure rated. Also the matching mud centrifugal pump

Desilter brief application

Oil well drilling mud desilter is after desander (or hydrocyclone desander). It is 3rd phase solids control equipment. It usually can separate particles as 15-40 microns

Desilter separator structure

Usually, there should be input pipeline, output line, bottom shaker, base frame, etc. Also there maybe without bottom shaker according to user’s demand.

How does desilter work?

The basic principle is drilling fluid transferred by centrifugal feeding pump to desilter from desander compartment in the mud tank. At this occassion, the drilling fluiud is under certain push force and pressure. The drilling fluid will becocme high speed whirl and give large centrifugal force.

Then the heavy solid particles will flow out via outlet hole. If there is bottom shaker, the drilling fluid will be filtered again by screen. Finally the particle will be separated out of tank.

Technique specs on hydrocyclone desilter

Mainly there should be desilter hydrocyclone number, diameter, matching pump, pressure, separation solid size, treating capacity, hydrocyclones material, and bottom shaker specs

The technique specs should be from user’s requirement on treating capacity, actual operation environment, etc. Usually the desilter cone diameter is 4″. Presently, GN desilter mainly use PU material cones, and clamp type one. Furthermore, there can be desilter cone with bottom shale shaker or not

Desilter parts

Desilter function for oil rig system

Anyhow, its function is to separate solids for providing finer drilling mud to centrifuge. During operation we need centrifugal pump to feed desilter hydrocyclone from desander compartment then after purification the clean mud will drop down to desilter compartment wait for next phase process

Desander is called 2nd phase solids control equipment. It can be used in drilling fluid processing, HDD bentonite recovery, etc.

Hydrocyclone on De-sander

Usually, De-sander including hyrocyclone, steel frame, pressure gauge.  De-sander hydrocyclone can be high-chromium iron or Polyurethane (PU). Actually, we ever designed 8″, 10″ and 12″ de-sander hydrocyclone on de-sander separator.

The modular de-sander using 10″ de-sander cone. Such as Derrick, Mi-Swaco, GN Solids Contrl, NOV Brandt, etc. Ccommonly it will separate particles 47-56 microns out from drilling fluid to achieve 2nd purification on drilling mud.

GN new standard de-sander is with two 10″ PU hydrocyclone. And the cone type is clamped connection one. This will save much time to give us higher efficiency on replacement, etc. Also provide better appearance.

 

How do cones work on De-sander?

The hydrocyclone basic principle is decanter separation. When the de-sander hydrocyclone under 0.25-0.40Mpa the cones will separate 90% solids out of drilling fluid.

Details is centrifugal feeding pump transfer drilling mud from shale shaker compartment to De-sander inlet. Under the pressure condition and power the drilling fluid will become swirl or whirlpool. Larger particals will be out of drilling mud and flow to de-sander outlet

Then the clean mud will down to direct compartment for next de-silting treatment. In fact, hydrocyclone used in de-sander is same principle on desilter hydrocyclone.

De-sander and de-silter combined together with shale shaker as mud cleaner or mud conditioner. The de-sander hydrocyclone used on mud cleaner will be equal with de-silter cones treating capacity. We design it according to clients’ requirement on treating capacity. Usually the de-sander hydrocyclone hold capacity as 500GPM while de-silter cone hold capacity 90GPM.
