Solids Control or Separation? What is now GN offering
Few days ago, got a call from client, we need the desanding unit, as shown in your separate flyer, with understanding now you are doing oil sludge separation, this is a different application. Got very confused actually after that call, well yes, we did quite some projects on oil sludge treatment, and it is getting better and better business, yet if you still stay with GN, you will understand.
GN Solids Control still a solid liquid separation company, we are doing separation job. CBM ( Coal Bed Methane) is very useful resource for people’s daily life. In order to get it out from the underground, it will also need the drilling process. During drilling, it will also need the solid control and mud recycling. GN now can provide the full mud recycling system for the CBM application for the customers in the coal rich area, such as the Shanxi province in China, or the Michigan or Ohio in the US. The scale and size will not be as big as the one used in the oil and gas drilling, but the function and equipment used on the system are similar.

The mud recycling system is mainly composed of the following equipment: 1, shale shaker which is 3 panel, linear motion for the coarse liquid and solid separation. The G force could reach up to 7.5 G at the flow rate of 500GPM. And now GN adopts the latest composite frame screens which will be more endurable, lighter and have more non-blank area. It’s more and more popular with the customers and the price stays almost the same as the old steel framed screens. 2, mud cleaner which is usually equipment with 1 desander, 8 desilter and a lower deck shaker. The mud will be separated further in the hydrocyclones and dries in the lower deck shaker screens. 3, 18 inch 452GNLW decanter centrifuge which could be configured both as the fixed speed or VFD variable speed. The surface of the screw and discharge port are protected by tough tungsten carbide tiles, and the bearings are made by world famous SKF. This product has been purchased by many big companies, such as BAKER HUGHES. 4, There mud tanks which will be used for mud mixing, recycling and intermediate transmission. All the system is equipped with necessary centrifugal pump and mixing hoppers.

GN solid control is a comprehensive company for manufacturing solid control and oilfield waste management system. As an important part for the solid control and mud recycling system, desander, desilter and mud cleaner could be applied in many areas, such as the oil and gas drilling, HDD, trenchless, CBM, TBM, mining, dredging and so on. Now in the industry there are two main kinds of method of mechanical separation,  one is using the screens devices and the other is using the centrifugal separation devices, Shale shaker and hydrocyclone represent the two typical methods. In the solid control system, the GN’s shale shaker has great G force that can separate the liquid and solid by vibrating the screens, which is also called the coarse separation. After the coarse separation, the solid will be gathered into the waste tank and get disposed, the liquid then will be transmitted into the circulation tank and transferred to the next level of tank for further separation. The next level of finer separation is by using the desander, desilter or the mud cleaner, which is also to be called the combination of shale shaker, desander and desilter. In the tank, a centrifugal pump will be working as the feed pump for the hydrocyclones.  The centrifugal pump will boost the liquid to the hydrocyclones. The liquid will first goes into the bigger hydroclone of the desander, whose diameter is 10 inch. After that separation, the liquid will be boosted into the desilter, whose diameter is 4 inch. All the processed liquid will be circulated into the next level and the solid will be transferred into the waste tank for final disposal. If there is valuable element in the liquid, such as the barite, there will be a shaker screen installed underneath the desander or desilter for further separation and drying the mud. All the GN’s equipment are reliable and tough,  and have been sold to more than 60 countries. They are all very popular with the customers.

Among all of GN’s product line, the mud recycling system for the drilling rig is a very popular and typical one. This system is with full stages of solid control equipment and large liquid storage tanks. Since its establishment in 2007, GN has already started manufacturing the solid control equipment for the oil and gas industry. After 10 years development, GN has already accumulated much experience and can be customer’s one stop shop for solid control system. Now its product range spanning from shale shakers, mud cleaners, decanter centrifuge, cutting dryer, vacuum degasser and so on.

The mud recycling system is mainly composed of the following elements: there are 14 tanks in total used for mud recycling, storage and mixing and for water and fuel storage. There are 3 units of shale shakers which will be connected to the mud distributors that will distribute the drilling mud coming through the pipeline from the wellbore. There is also a mud gas separator to eliminate the flammable gas for safety purpose. And after the shale shaker, there is one vacuum degasser which will be used to remove the cut in gas in the mud to improve the efficiency of the centrifugal pump. After that is one mud cleaner which is composed of desander, desilter and underlying shale shaker. One decanter centrifuge is also equipped in the system for barite recovery. This can save the operator a lot of money as barite is very useful and expensive. There are also various pumps installed in the system to perform their function, such as the centrifugal pump which is used to transfer the drilling mud in the system. And there are also about 30 units of agitators and mud guns which will be used to clean the corners of the tank and mixing the mud in the tank to keep the mud property at good level.

GN solid control was established for more than 10 years, now it has developed from just manufacturing one or two kinds of solid control equipment to covering almost all the solid control equipment, including shale shaker, desander, desilter, mud cleaner, vacuum degasser, mud gas separator, decanter centrifuge, agitator, centrifugal pump, cutting dryer, screw pump, shear pump, mud gun and so on. GN has successfully diversified its product line. After 10 years development, GN has promoted its products to over 60 countries and now it also established two overseas subsidiaries, US and Russia.

Recently GN released its four solid control systems and today we will introduce one of them, it is Solids Removal Unit for mining industry. The Solids Removal Unit (SRU) is mainly used in the drilling fluids and solids control for the small size mining rigs for the diamond drilling. The solids removal units can provide the cost effective solution for the solids removal, reduced the environmental impact to the minimum level and greatly improved the efficiency for the diamond drilling. So it’s highly appraised by the drilling experts as the future of the diamond drilling industry. The Solids removal unit is a closed loop for drilling fluid and solid process system. It contains mini shale shaker, mini decanter centrifuge (This is GN’s 223 centrifuge which is the world’s smallest.), pumps, mixing tanks and generators(optional). The working theory is simple, the drilling fluid will be circulated from the wellbore and went onto the shale shaker for coarse screening, the fluids will flow down to the tank and be pumped up by another feeding pump into the decanter centrifuge for finer screening. And the cleaner fluid will be recirculated into the well for drilling. There are also mixing hopper, chamber and pumps making the adding of chemical easy.

Recently as the time coming closer to OCT 2017, the weather in Houston is getting warmer and warmer. And the oil and gas drilling activity is like the weather in Houston, it is getting warmer and warmer, more and more rigs start drilling again. Once the rigs start rotating, there will be more and more consumption for the shale shaker screens. So GN Solids Control made another big step forward-sending a full 40’ container of screens and a 20’ containers of screens and parts heading to its US warehouse in Houston again. The new containers mainly containing the replacement screens for MONGOOSE and KING COBRA/ VENOM. These screens have been inquired by many customers and after the first 40 feet container has almost been sold out,  GN believe once they landed in Houston warehouse, they will be also gone very quickly. So everyone who has the requirement for shaker screens, hurry up. Because it’s gone fast and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Let’s hurry up and grasp the opportunity.

Now GN new composite screens are manufactured in its newly built No. 2 factory, which can now manufacture over 5000 pieces of the composite frame screens per month. From the end of last year GN has gradually upgraded its screen product line from metal frame to composite frame. As the new composite frame screens have the following new features: the screen steel frame inside the composite shell is made by automatic robot welding, which will make the screen better quality and consistency. The screens are all four side pre-tensioned. This will make the reduce the gas between mesh layers and extend the screen life. All the GN screens if API is above 60, it will be all three layers. GN has the same supplier of its wire mesh as DERRICK and MI SWACO which will guarantee the quality of replacement screens close to the OEM’s.  GN’s screen life could be up to 300-700 hours under different working conditions. The effective and usable area of composite frame screens could be 10%-20% larger than the old metal screen area. The composite screen is easier to be stored at least for 5 years. Now GN can not only manufacture it own OEN’s replacement composite screens for its own shaker 594, 703, 752, but also can manufacture most of the industry famous OEM screens manufacturer’s replacement screens, even customize the composite screens as per customer’s requirement.

The adjustable effluent port make the pond depth adjustment easier and more convenient and fast. The pneumatic controlled spring will make the opening of the cover more easily and safely. During the transportation, the bowl lifting bracket can perform as the protection for the bearings. The bearings are made by the world famous SKF company. The two motors are placed at one side of the equipment and make it smaller footprint. The conveyor surface is made from Tungsten carbide tiles which is more endurable and easy for maintenance. GN Solids America facility was first established in 2014 in Houston, TX. The facility is a multi functional with office, assembly center and spare parts center. The facility takes about 30,000 square feet. This office is the first overseas subsidiary for GN Solids Control and is performing the function as sales, after market service and warehousing.

Now in GN Solids America warehouse, there is plenty of shaker screen in stock. There are many types of screen there, such as the GN own brand GNZS series, replacement screens  for MI-SWACO MONGOOSE PRO, MONGOOSE PT and MEERKAT, ALS, BEM; replacement screens for DERRICK FLC 2000, FLC 500, DP 600, and hyperpool; replacement screens for NOV Brandt Cobra, King Cobra, Mini Cobra, Venom, LCM-2D, LCM-3D, VSM 300 series( include scalping, primary and secondary) and replacement screen for some other popular brand, such as Fluid System. GN Solids control can manufacture many types of screen, such as the composite frame, metal frame, soft hook strip and hard hook strip. The screen could be flat or pyramid according to customer’s requirement. The screen could be 2 layers or 3 layers depending on the customer’s requirement for the API number. The screen surface are made of stainless steel, usually use SS304 or SS316. This material can make the screen more endurable and work for longer time. The raw material of the wire meshes is the same as DERRICK and MI SWACO, this can also guarantee the performance of the screen close to the OEM. The regulare screen opening area makes the repair for the screens easier and it could be done by a plug, which will help save cost. The composite screens can be stored for even longer time usually over 5 years as the frame is anti-corrosion. The non-blank area could be 20% more than the regular ones and all the wire mesh configuration is compliant to API RP 13 C.

GN’s solid control system for oil and gas drilling is mainly composed of the following equipment: 1, shale shaker, usually there will be 3 which will be connected to the mud distribution system to get the evenly distributed mud. At this stage, the mud will be coarsely separated and then it will goes to the next stage. 2, vacuum degasser which will be used for discharge the cut in gas in the mud. The decanter centrifuge is very tough and need less maintenance, as the screw is made of stainless steel 2205 and the surface of screw and discharge port is made of tungsten carbide tiles. 5, Mud tanks will be separated into several different compartments for different use, such as mud mixing, intermediate transmission, reserving and so on. 6, There are also many auxiliary parts, such as the agitator which will continuously stiring the mud to make sure it’s even. The mud gun which will be used to clean the corner of the tank to avoid the residue of the solid accumulated there.
