Many persons may hear about the drilling mud solids control. But conerning how to purify the drlling mud, not so many people know well about it. Here we would like to talking about the drilling mud 4 stages solids control and 5 stages purification.

First stage for solids control & purification

Shale shaker is widely known as a solids control equipments used in drilling projects. It is a very basic equipment that could separate the drilling cutting more than 250 microns by fine mesh screens. During this stage, actually, the solids control and purificaion happens at the same time. Just as its name implies, solids control is separate the solids from the fluids, while the drilling cutting and other large size impurities being separated, the drilling mud is purified.

Shortly before,we sent one set SB6x5-12 centrifugal pump with control panel to our Indonesia customer. They are a drilling company, and have their mud recycling system on their work site. After find our products from the internet website, they contact with us and plan to have a try for our products. Happend to that they need a charge pump for their 44OHP mud pump. After some communication on the phone and through the mail, and their once visit to our factory, they placed the order.

This set SB6x5-12 centrifugal pump is consist of Pump head, 37KW electric motor, independent control box.  All the parts are mounted on a skid. Comparing with our usual installation, we did’t weld the the control panel fixed on the skip, but bolt it so that it could be uninstalled easily.

Core Drilling is a main mode of exploration in mining industial like the seeking for copper, gold and silver. The main equipment of a core drilling is a diamond-tipped core drills. It is always designed as the opened end to remove a cylinder of material, The material left inside the drill bit is referred to as the core.

Core Drilling Cuttings

The cuttings created in the core drilling is very fine. These ultra fine cuttings can cause many issues down the hole such as broken cores, lost cores, and premature bit wear. In order to keep the core intact and the bit cooled, a bentonite including drilling mud is required. Besides the above mentioed two functions, the drilling mud could also take the cuttings out of the drilling hole.

Core Drilling Solids Control Unit

The flow rate of drilling mud in a core drilling is aften not large, maybe hundred GPM. So, not all the whole line solids control equipments needed. Sometimes, a desander with tank is enough to remove the ultra fine cuttings from the drilling mud. Different end user may choose different equipment to complete the mud clean mission, therefore, a high efficience centrifuge is also a ideal solution.

Centrifugal pump working feature

Drilling fluid pump is one special pump in centrifugal pump. We also call it as sand pump. It is mainly used to transfer drilling flfuid for desander, desilter, and provide sufficient power for mixing drilling fluid.

As we know, drilling mud centrifugal pump is processing drilling fluid with various solid particle and chemical. It is mainly suspending liquid then the pump impeller and casing should be more durable and high anticorrosive capability
The pump working condition is rather hard will transfer drilling fluid with solid in long term. We need the bearing seal is very reliable and steady.

Meanwhile, the medium has corrosion feature the inner seal will be broken more or less. Then shorten pump usable life and decrease efficiency. We must provide convenience for adjusting impeller and front cover space to decrease leakage

Furthermore, we should consider drilling fluid centrifugal pump should have proper pressure and match well with hydrocyclone separator(desander cone,desilter cone, mud mixing system)

Centrifugal pump is combined with impeller and casing. Drilling fluid will be sucted from impeller side, when impeller rotates at high speed there will be centrifugal force and gain power or pressure. Then fluid flow through impeller path will produce pressure out. The drilling mud will come out under certain pressure.

If centrifugal pump is feeding pump for hydrocyclone separator the drilling mud will flow into cones under pressure and get a screw to separate larger particles out. If the pump is only transfering pump or for mixing system the pressure will ensure the sufficient motivity and flow rate

Almost every kind of drilling will request drilling mud or drilling fluid as we call it. There will be drilling cuttings invade to drilling mud during drillings. So we need solids control or other drilling mud process on drilling fluids during well drilling or HDD. This will decrease much cost on drillings.

During solids control, centrifugal pump is mainly treated as power for transfering fluid from equipment to another, from one compartment to another one

Solids control system configuration

Usually, the solids control system is 4 phases. Including shale shaker, Desander, Desilter, or mud conditioner, then the decanter centrifuge. This configuration is considered as modular configuration. However, we also know, different clients have different requirements on certain drilling conditions, etc. So the system will be combined with standard equipments as optimal system for individual users

After knowing the solids control systems cocnfiguration, we’ll get how many centrifugal pumps we need. And in each specific system configuration centrifugal pump will have certain special applications

 

Centrifugal pump applications in system

1. Different centrifugal pumps

In solids control system or mud recycling system. There is usually two types centrifugal pump. Including vertical centrifugal pump mainly is subermsible slurry pump and horizontal pump.

If in HDD mud recycling system, there maybe submersible slurry pump to suck drilling mud from mud pit. Of cours, submersible slurry pump also can be treated as feeding pump for desander, desilter, or mud cleaners.

For majority solids control system, to feed desander, desilter and mud cleaner will use horizontal centrifugal pump. The applications is pump drilling fluid from one space to another. Make drilling mud having power to flow during serveral compartment and equipments

2. Detailed centrifugal pump applications

Take mud cleaner for example. The drilling mud after processed by shale shaker will drop down to shale shaker compartment, then we need to process it by mud cleaner. Firstly, centrifugal pump will transferr drilling fluid from this compartment to desander cones, after desander processing the mud drop down to desander compartment.

We need drilling mud more fine and high property. Then we come to desilter. At this time, centrifugal pump will pump drilling fluid to desilter cones. Then we’ll get relative clean mud without particles larger than 15 microns

NOV Mission pump introduction

Mission pump was designed by NOV in 1950’s. It is included in centrifugal pump.  The first type is “W” one. During 6 decade improvement and development it hold mainly four series pumps. Such as Magnum™, 2500 Supreme ™, magnum™ XP, Sandamaster™.

Actually, in China oil industry we usaully call centrifugal pump as “Sand pump”. Since the pumps are mainly used to pump drilling mud for Desander, Desilter, or mud cleaner.

Pumps transfer mud between mud tank and equipment. Finally, drilling fluid is transfered from one compartment to another; one tank to another.

The centrifugal pump can be divided into vertical type and horizontal type. Now we just take horizontal type compared with Mission pump.

The pump in China including oil seal type and mechanical seal type. For the mechanical seal pump, it is widely appreciated by oil&gas industy users, since it’s more stronger, and more durable.

Thicker, Stronger, Concentric casing. All of Mission pumps featur a concentric casing that is an average of 37% thicker than conventional pump casings, and up to 50% thicker for the larger, mud pumping models. They are pressure rated at 1.5 times the flange rating and are designed with a 1/8″ erosion allowance.

GN produce desander and desilter unit, also horizontal centrifugal pump for feeding them. Sometimes we assembly them together with a small tank, which is called desander/desilter unit or mud cleaning unit. All slurry pump, sand pumps are called centrifugal pump.

How it works

A centrifugal pump is a rotodynamic pump that uses a rotating impeller to increase the pressure of a fluid. Centrifugal pumps are commonly used to move liquids through a piping system. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from where it exits into the downstream piping system. Centrifugal pumps are used for large discharge through smaller heads.
