GN 150 GPM Drilling Waste Management System
Recently, GN Solids Control welcomed one of the America client in Hebei factory. This client shows many interests to GN drilling waste management system. GN colleagues have discussed a lot on this system to answer any questions from this client. GN technical engineer has provided technical support and draw 2D drawings for this client.
Since every client has special demands for their equipments, GN always try to do their best.
This system consists of two tanks. The first mud tank is to separate the drilling waste and provide solids to the second mud tank. The second mud tank is used for drying the drilling waste.
For the first mud tank, GN recommends our client to use the following equipments:

 Vertical Cutttings Dryer & Decanter Centrifuge

1. One set of Mud Recycling System, which is including one shale shaker, one Mini
Mud Cleaner, one Centrifugal Pump and one mud tank.
GN Shale Shaker is using GNZS 703E- HB, this type can reach to 7.5 G high vibrating strength, which is adjustable by adjusting the vibration motor. GN Mini Mud Cleaner is using GNZJ 752E- 4N, the working capacity of this cleaner is 200GPM. And the GN centrifugal pump is using GNSB 4x3A-10J, this one is used for feeding the drilling waste to mud cleaner.
2. One set of Vertical Cuttings Dryer, which consists of one set of GN vertical cuttings dryer, one set of GN high configuration decanter centrifuge, two NEMO pumps, one centrifugal pump and one mud tank.
GN Decanter Centrifuge and GN Vertical Cuttings Dryer is one set of perfect match for cuttings dryer. Usually, the vertical cuttings dryer can deal with 30 tons to 50 tons cuttings each hour, and the oil can be controlled with 5 percent, which is very suitable for environment protection.
Sometimes, clients from some countries may have very strict demands on the oil percentage; in this case the cuttings need to be dealt with extra process such as chemical reaction which is another topic.

Working Process



The slurry pump sucked the mud from the Sediment Basins or mud compartment, then enter into bottom shaker through inlet pipe, the particle size which is larger than 0.5mm will be separated out and flow to mud storage tank, The slurry pump feed mud from mud storage tank to hydrocyclone.the underlfow of hydrocyclone discharged to upper shaker . after dewatering process of the upper shaker, The dry solids wwas separated out. The overflow from hydrocyclone entered
clean mud storage tank.

GN shale shaker is one of the main equipments in GN’s products line. It is widely used in all GN mud recycling systems for oil drilling and HDD. As a spare part of shale shaker, the shaker screen determines the shale shaker performance to some extend.

GN shale shaker screen is installed and removed by fastening and loosen the polyurethane wedge block. Fixing one pc screen need 2 pcs wedge blocks on either side of the shaker deck. The wedge block is wedged into the slot produced by a piece welded angle stell.
When replace the shaker screen, just need loosen the wedge blocks. It is bery easy and time saving which greatly increase the working efficience.

When operating the shale shaker, the high G vibration force produced by the vibration motor also make the screen shake up and down. In order to reduce the shakeing force functioned on the screen, we stick rubber strip on the screen frame. Besides this, GN Shale shaker also has the screen supporting steel beam according the screen frame as well as the rubber gaskets on the shaker deck. All above has greatly increase the impact resistance of the shaker screen and extended the screen life.

There are some types of expensive additives and chemicals in the drilling mud which make the drilling mud high cost and environmental halmful. So, how to separate the drilling cuttings from the drilling mud to make the drilling mud recyclable become a concern attracts more attention.

The principle of Separating the drilling cutting

The basic theory of separating the drilling cutting is Solids Control. The solids control in oil drilling refers to remove the solid particals from the drilling fluids. Drilling cuttings is separated as solid particals step by step by some physical and chemicals methods.

In each step of separating the drilling cuttings, we would involve one type separating equipments that are also called Solids Control Equipments.

Take the oil drilling cuttings separating as an example, we could meet some separating equipments below:
Shale shaker – which is matched with fine mesh screen to separate the cuttings of size large than 400 microns.
Mud cleaner – the polyurethane material cyclone could separate the drilling cuttings with size mimimum to 15 microns.
Decanting Centrifuge – in order to meet the high level demand of drilling mud for oil drilling, the drilling cuttings is of size several microns must be separated out from the mud. By using the centrifugal sedimentation principle, the centrifuge could complete the mission of separating the drilling cuttings at maximumly.

After treatment by the centrifuge, almost all the drilling cuttings would be separated out from the drilling mud, now the active mud could be reinject into the drilling hole to make next circle. Sometimes, the active mud need to be added some additives which have run off when separating the drilling cuttings.

Person who works on drilling site know that there are several additives in the drilling mud, like bentonite,clay and Polymer. When add the polymer into the drilling mud, we may use the shearing pump.


In a drilling mud recycling system, for the bentonite and other additives, we could use the centrifugal pump to shear and mixing them. But for long strings polymer, only the shearing pump could be used for its wider flow pass and smooth vanes.

Always the shearing pump is package together with hopper, mud gun and transfer line which could transfer the mixed mud into each tank compartment. The impeller of GN shearing pump is made of high wear resistant cast iron for longer service life. Any need for shearing pump and other solids control equipments, just feel contact with GN Solids Control.

In order to protect the drilling head and take the drilling cutting out of the drill hole, we need inject drilling mud into the drilling hole by the drilling pipe. The expensive cost and recyclability promot the management for drilling waste. Simplely speaking, drilling waste management is to remove the useless drilling cuttings to get the active drilling fluids.

Shale shaker is the first stage equipments in the procedure of drilling waste management. Drilling fluids mixed with large size drilling cuttings get into the screen deck.

Under the function of vibrating force, the liquid pass through the mesh screen, while the large size solid particals are removed out and get into the screw conveyer. Now the drilling waste management starts actually.
The drilling waste is transfered in to the cutting drier. In this procedure, under the centrifugal force, the liquid get rid of the fetter solid phase and pass the mesh screen into the outlet pipe, the very dry solids waste discharged out which could be easily move to other place to bury or for other application.
Always, a storage tank is used to store the liquid out of the cutting drier. Here the liquid is pumped into the centrifuge by a screw pump. In the centrifuge, more tiny solids could be separated out. After the treatment by a centrifuge, the drilling fluids is active.
